Comprehensive Eye Examinations

Pre-testing Includes:

  • Lensometry & Refractometry - The lensometer is equipped to automatically cycle a series of lenses to measure the power of your old glasses. With this information, the doctor will be able to determine whether your prescription has changed. Most patient's eyes change gradually over time. Any change outside the normal range could indicate a more serious problem. This is why it is important to accurately measure unknown prescriptions with each eye examination.

  • Glaucoma Screening - All regular examinations include an ophthalmoscopy. This procedure allows the doctor to examine the internal structures of the eye. In addition to cataracts and glaucoma, many systemic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes show up here. The optic nerve, vessels, and other internal tissues of the eye are evaluated during your eye health examination. We also perform a painless procedure called tonometry to measure the pressure inside your eye or intraocular pressure (IOP). This common procedure is important in the detection of glaucoma.

  • Corneal Topography - Corneal Topography uses a computerized photographic instrument that surveys the cornea and provides a detailed topographical "map" of its shape. The cornea is the highly curved clear window on the front of the eye. The cornea helps focus light on the retina and therefore plays a significant role in how well you see. As the curvature of this clear structure changes, both the way your contact lens fits and your prescription can change. Understanding these exact curvatures is necessary to properly fit and prescribe contact lenses or glasses. This information can also help the doctor determine if Corneal Refractive Therapy or refractive surgery is appropriate. The corneal topographer is a major advancement in corneal analysis. In addition to contact lens and refractive surgery applications, the corneal topography system can detect slight conditions invisible to conventional testing and monitor subtle changes of your cornea over time.

  • Optomap ® Retinal Scan - Obtaining Optomap images is comfortable, quick, and simple. The digital image of your retina is captured in less than a second. A small flash indicates the image has been taken. Your Optomap is immediately displayed for your eye specialist to review with you. The Optomap Retinal Exam does not require dilating drops which typically cause blurred vision and sensitivity to light for hours. Your Optomap Retinal Images are stored electronically. This gives your doctor a permanent record of the condition of your retina. This is important to assist your doctor in detecting and measuring any changes to your retina between regular examinations. Doctors at Arizona's Vision will also manually inspect the back of your eye, the retina, to check that it is healthy and not showing signs of damage or disease. If detected at an early stage, many eye diseases can be treated successfully without loss of vision. A comprehensive retinal examination can also detect signs of other diseases that affect not just your eyes, but also your overall health.

    Eye Examination Includes:
  • Comprehensive History - Your doctor at Arizona's Vision will want to prescribe the best possible treatment for you. To do this effectively, the doctor will need to know some basic background information about you and your family. We not only want to know about your eyes, we need to get to know what you do on a daily basis to help better recommend the best treatment. If you spend time on the computer or reading quite a bit during the day, we need to know how you feel after you are through, or how long are the increments in which you can do these tasks. Your doctor at Arizona's Vision doesn't want you to leave anything out!

  • Refraction - The part of the comprehensive eye exam which is usually considered the "eye exam" is refraction, or measurement of your vision. While this is only one phase of the examination, it is certainly an important one. Using the most advanced equipment, we perform a series of lens tests to determine if you need glasses or contact lenses to improve your vision. It will be important for us to know if you are having any problems and how you use your eyes for work, school, hobbies, and sports. If you need a correction, not only will you see better, in many cases we can enhance occupational and recreational performance.

  • Eye Health Assessment - Dilation of the eye is part of the professional examination you will receive from Arizona's Vision's staff. Dilating agents allow the optometrist to see a wide-angle view of ocular structures in the back of the eye. Optometrists have invested in this ophthalmic equipment to ensure accurate diagnosis and timely treatment of most eyecare problems.

  • Doctor Recommendation - After evaluating all the information and tests performed, your eye doctor will talk to you about his professional recommendation. Your doctor will visit with you about the choices you have and answer any questions you may have for him or her.
